Injectable fillers are the second most common cosmetic procedure after Botox.

The fillers are injected into the skin to fill in facial wrinkles, or add volume where it has been lost to aging. As fillers are a relatively low risk, inexpensive, and convenient procedure, they have become one of the leading procedures in cosmetic dermatology.

Frequently asked questions

Why are fillers so popular?

Fillers reliably result in the desired cosmetic outcome, have excellent safety profiles with minimal downtime, and have relatively low costs.

Are the changes permanent?

The vast majority of fillers are non-permanent. Some fillers like polylactic acid are semi-permanent or even permanent, but most procedures are temporary. Longer lasting fillers are not the focus of this article – they have their uses – but it’s always a good idea to inquire with your cosmetic dermatologist for all the options.

How drastic a change can I expect?

That’s up to the patient. The patient decides what they want from the procedure. At Skin Effect our goal is to provide you with a natural, subtle, soft improvements – enough to notice a difference, but one that is not aggressive or drastic. Some patients do prefer a more dramatic change and will opt for a larger dose of filler. Communicate what you want clearly with the performing Registered Nurse during your consultation.

Safety, side-effects, and downtime:

Along with being effective at rejuvenating the face, fillers also have excellent safety profiles, with minimal downtime, making it an extremely convenient procedure. The most common side-effects (still very rare) are infections, and irregular movement of the filler, both of which can be treated.

How much do fillers cost?

Treatments usually start at a few hundred dollars and go up from there. The factors that influence price are: -How much filler is being used -Which particular filler is being used However, this is only part of the equation. The vast majority of fillers are temporary fillers, lasting from 3 to 12 months depending on the filler and the location. This means that re-treatment will be necessary to maintain the appearance over time. Finally, as fillers do not stop the aging process itself, you may need more filler for a similar effect when you are older.

Who gets injectable fillers?

Injectable fillers are the second most popular procedure across the board. Men and women, young and old use fillers to smooth out the skin, but the demographic skew towards middle age. It is also skewed towards women as well. Women form a majority of cosmetic patients generally but form a much bigger majority when it comes to injectable fillers, making about 95% of patients.

Are injectable fillers the same thing as Botox?

Botox is a brand name of botulinum toxin and is a commonly used cosmetic procedure to reduce wrinkles, most commonly in the upper third of the face, which is primarily caused by overuse of facial muscles. Injectable fillers, on the other hand, is indicated mainly for the lower half of the face, to fill in and restore lost volume. Botox and injectable fillers make up the number 1 and 2 most commonly performed cosmetic procedures as both have excellent safety, reliability, and patient satisfaction at a relatively low cost.

What do I do to prep BEFORE my appointment?

Do not take any aspirin, ibuprofen or similar products (Advil, Motrin, Aleve) for 1 week prior to filler. Avoid fish oil, Vitamin E, and gingko biloba for 1 week prior to filler. Eat spinach, kale and celery the week before to boost your levels of Vitamin K. Avoid eating apples or large quantities of garlic before your appointment. Hydrate and eat a large meal before filler and bring a snack to eat right before the injection. It is important to have a full meal before a filler appointment. Clear your schedule after filler so you can take time to ice your face and relax Discuss with the Nurse the best post care regime for optimal results after Filler.

What can I do AFTER my appointment?

Apply a Cool Skin Effect Gel pack to the treated area immediately after treatment. Continue to ice for swelling and soreness for as long as necessary – especially in the morning DO NOT work out the same day after the filler – the next day is okay DO NOT have a massage with face down for two weeks after filler DO NOT wear swim goggles for two weeks after filler around the eyes or cheeks DO NOT put on Retin-A or strong Retinols the night after filler – okay to resume the day after DO NOT take ibuprofen or aspirin for 36 hours after filler DO NOT have an important social event for 5 days after filler – you will look your best after filler at 3-4 weeks after the injection DO talk with your Nurse injector about best post care skin regimes for optimal results! DO Expect compliments within 4-5 days! Best ways to maintain your new look: Stay hydrated – hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Revaness) binds to water, the more hydrated you are the better you will look. It is best not to go more than 6 months between filler appointments. By maintaining this schedule you will not only be able to maintain your look, but also make continued improvements (when an adequate amount of filler are placed). After two years of this type of schedule, the majority of patients will require less filler per visit than during the first two years.
